Thanks to Adele and Ryan in H501 the Stacks now has a shiny new Sustainability Committee!

An initial meeting was held Saturday August 31 where we discussed everything from reducing power consumption here at the Stacks, to evaluating water consumption, vehicle impact and solar options for outdoor lights.  Outside of the most common topics such as recycling, we discussed organizing a site wide quarterly garage/rummage sale in our parking lot and opening our gates to all of Cabbagetown to participate.

We would like to start a sustainability education program that will allow us to host sustainability fairs where community organizations such as Habitat, CHARM and CompostNow can come talk to us about about the value of reuse and recycling.  We want to take active steps to reduce our impact on the environment and increase the savings of our community.

Old Paint Collection
And speaking of reuse and recycling…  our very first initiative is something that really brings the concept of community and sustainability full circle.  (Adele literally jumped up and down with excitement when Nathanial recommended it!)  In conjunction with Forward Warrior the Stacks Sustainability Committee will be collecting old paint that stacks residents want to get rid of- for reuse on the Forward Warrior wall!

There are just a few conditions.

  • No stain or oil based paint can be accepted and unfortunately the paint cannot be white, beige or gray.

All other paint will be accepted.  Paint is due to Forward Warrior by September 9th so the Sustainability Committee will be picking up paint on the following two evenings for donation.

All Stacks residents have to do is set their dusty unwanted paint cans outside their door for collection.

  • Wednesday September 4th at 9pm
  • Sunday September 8th at 9pm

Lastly our committee needs volunteers!  We would love to have a large representation from the community as there is no shortage of work to do.  We can be reached at “stacks.sustainability@gmail.com” and will be also reading out our goals and accomplishments at the monthly HOA meeting.
